Sustainable Calgary would like to introduce two new board members:
Chris Turner and Usha Mulukutla
Chris Turner is the author of the national bestseller The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need (Random House, 2007), which was named one of the Globe & Mail's Best Books of the year and shortlisted for the National Business Book Award and Alberta Literary Award for Nonfiction. He is also the author of the international bestseller Planet Simpson: How A Cartoon Masterpiece Documented an Era and Defined a Generation (2004). He writes a monthly feature on sustainability for The Globe & Mail.
His magazine writing – mostly for the late, great Shift Magazine – has earned him four Canadian National Magazine Awards and six honourable mentions. His writing and reporting on culture, technology and the environment have also appeared in The Independent (UK), Time Magazine, Maclean's, Canadian Geographic, The Walrus, Azure and Utne Reader.
The Shift essay "Why Technology Is Failing Us" was an impassioned essay in favour of harnessing the social forces of the digital revolution in the service of fighting climate change. It won two gold medals at the 2001 National Magazine Awards (including the President's Medal, the highest honour in Canadian magazine writing), and his interest in climate change mitigation and sustainable living has been building ever since. The research for his 2007 book The Geography of Hope has turned into a single-minded career obsession - hunting out and publicizing the latest and greatest developments in the sustainability movement.
Usha Mulukutla is an Environmental scientist with more than 10 years of national & international experience in the key areas of remediation, risk management of contaminated sites, solid, hazardous waste management, water quality, land planning, development & reclamation and confined feeding operations.
After working in Calgary Health Region for five years, she now works for the National Energy Board as an environmental specialist.
Usha was born and brought up in India. She was passionate about environment and followed up her interest by doing Master’s & Doctorate in the same field. She worked with WWF-India, a non-government organization as the Pollution Control Co-coordinator. She took up a number of environmental awareness campaigns, including river watch program, vehicular pollution awareness program, etc.
Usha has actively participated in Provincial and Municipal Multi stakeholder Committees and provided inputs to developing a long range integrated land use and transportation plan for Calgary. Her key focus is on promoting sustainable communities based on smart growth principles.
Usha‘s vision is to make Calgary a healthy place for generations to enjoy.
